Repurposed planters

I do love a planter but find that they can be quite expensive. So I try and pick random items up at car boot sales and Facebook marketplace and repurpose them as planters.

I think my favourite one has to be an oil drum we found on Facebook marketplace for ten pound. I was looking for something large for my fig tree which needed potting on. I knew it would be large enough and loved the rusty look (I'm a little odd like that, rust is my thing 😂🤎)  the handsome one collected it for me. As you can see in the pictures it came with a lid and a circular hoop used for sealing the drum. We drilled quite a few holes in the bottom for drainage and then planted the fig tree. Two years on the fig tree is very happy in her new home. We used the lid for a chalk board/ beware of the sausages sign which we keep in the garden shelter and the hoop part was used to make a wreath as shown in pics.

Another favourite of mine are old chimney pots, I have them in various sizes and love the look of them. I try and plant evergreens in them so over winter they add some structure and colour to the flower beds when everything  else around them is a lovely shade of brown 🙈😂🤎

I have a few vintage metal coal scuttle inserts which I try and plant either bulbs or annuals in. Hyacinths are my favourite spring bulbs. I love the vibrancy of the flowers and the scent is lovely, not everyone's cup of tea, but I love it. I like to plant quite a few together, as you can see from the pictures. I plant them on the surface of the soil, we get so much rain here, I find it makes them less likely to rot, as I keep the hyacinths outside as soon as I have planted them. It worked last year we had blooms for weeks and the scent was amazing đŸĒģđŸĒģ

I also love vintage buckets, I use these for daffodil bulbs, I find they're a good depth for them and they always seem to do ok in them. I also love to plant in watering cans that are no longer fit for purpose, I have a terrible habit of leaving watering cans out over winter which always damages rhem 🙈❄ī¸ on the plus side they look good with plants in!!! I have recently planted a phormium

in one, which is adding a lovely splash of colour to the flower bed, I removed the bottom of the watering can so the roots won't get pot bound.
